First digit is used to denote a broad geographical area in U.S that could range from zero for the Northeast to nine for the far West.
Then the two digits that follow it are used are used to denote the concentration of population within those areas. The final two digits actually specify the small post offices or postal zones in larger and complex cities. The extra digits came into existence in 1983to denote the location.
